Bringing Healthcare Innovations in India to Life

The Pfizer-IIT Delhi Innovation and IP Program is a collaborative incubation accelerator - co-created by Pfizer and Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi).

The Program will provide - funding, resources, expertise and infrastructure – to propel India’s healthcare innovations from idea to IP.

Pfizer funding through this program will provide an unencumbered grant of upto Rs. 60 lakhs to each innovator – selected through an appropriately drawn up process.

Patents obtained as a result of the incubation shall belong to the innovators, who will be free to commercialize them as they desire.

Two components of the Pfizer IIT Delhi Innovation & IP Program (PIDIIP)

  1. For innovators seeking comprehensive support to translate their healthcare ideas into new business opportunities, the Program provides:
    • Incubation at IIT Delhi’s bio-incubator for a period of up to 2 years.
    • Funding of upto INR 60 lakhs for each innovator to take ideas through proof of concept to IP.
    • Mentoring support from IIT Delhi’s faculty and FITT nominated experts.
    • Access to infrastructure, prototyping laboratories and space for setting up an office.
    • IP search and filing services.
    • Guidance from Pfizer’s global experts.
    • Access to venture capitalists and other industry linkages
  2. For innovators who already have a proof of principle /concept and are only looking for IP related support, the program provides:
    • Access to IP counseling services at FITT.
    • Funding support to cover patenting expenses.

Who Can Apply

For a better understanding of the eligibility criteria kindly go through the following.

Eligibility Criteria
  1. Individuals
    • The individual must be an Indian citizen.
    • The individual must have completed basic undergraduate training in natural sciences/engineering/ medicine. Essential qualification is PhD/MTech/BTech/BPharm/MD/MBBS/BDS/MSc/MPhil/MDes/ MPH/MBA/MSW and equivalents with undergraduate training in Science, Medicine, Engineering. Individuals with a BSc degree with at least 1 year of full‐time work or research experience shall also be eligible.
    • The individual should be the Principal Investigator who meets eligibility requirements mentioned below.
    • The individual has to be physically incubated in technology Business Incubator at IIT Delhi.
    • If the individual is formally employed (or registered as a student) with a non-profit academic or research organization, then the individual has to produce a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the head of the organization clearly indicating that the organization has policies in place to allow the individual to accept funding support (if successful) as an individual under this program.
    • Alternatively, the individual needs to provide an undertaking that he/she plans to terminate his association with the current employer and take up the project full time in the event of a grant approval. A resignation/ relieving/retirement letter will be needed as supporting document before final approval and release of the grant.
    • If the individual has a controlling stake/role in an ineligible Company (start-up more than 3 years (to be checked) old or in receipt of any funding), then the individual is ineligible
    • An individual that has already received Govt./Private support once is not eligible for receiving PIIP funding support once again for the same idea
  2. Company
    • The start-up Company should be registered under the Indian Companies Act, 1956/2013.
    • The incorporation date of the Company should not be earlier than 3 years from the date of launch of the PIIP call.
    • A company is considered as 'Owned’ by resident Indian citizen if minimum 51% of the capital in it is beneficially owned by resident Indian citizens and /or Indian companies, which are ultimately owned and controlled by resident Indian citizens.
    • A Principal Investigator who qualifies the eligibility requirements must represent the start-up Company’s application.
Other Eligibility Criteria
  1. Principal Investigator
    • Every proposal must clearly identify a Principal Investigator who will take responsibility for the technical and managerial aspects of the project execution.
    • The Principal Investigator must be technically qualified to undertake the project. The Principal Investigator must have completed basic undergraduate training in natural sciences/engineering/ medicine. Essential qualification is PhD/MTech/BTech/BPharm/MD/MBBS/BDS/ MSc / M Phil/ M Des / MPH /MBA / MSW and equivalents with under‐ graduate training in Science, Medicine, Engineering.
    • In the event that the proposal is shortlisted for presentation in front of the Pfizer-IIT Delhi Innovation & IP programme Committee, then the same Principal Investigator will be required to present the case for support. In the event that proposal is shortlisted for funding support, then the Project.
    • Investigator will be required to sign the project agreement.
  1. Others
    Individuals are expected to show documentary evidence that they have tied up the following critical resources needed to execute the project:
    • At the time of application and prior to shortlisting for presentation to the Committee.
    • Letter of commitment from Scientific Advisors/Mentors to serve as honorary advisors.
    • Letter of intent of key members of the technical team.
    • The project cannot be the same as another project by the same individual with the same scope and objectives that has already received funding from another source of grant-in-aid funding from any source.
  1. What is not supported
    • Project not related to Healthcare.
    • Basic/exploratory research projects that aim to demonstrate scientific principles/techniques etc without technology commercialization objectives.
    • Projects with no plan to translate ideas into scalable (implementable) technology / products/ services.
    • Projects with no element of novelty.
    • Projects involving ethical and EHS risks as may be deemed undesirable by experts.
    • Projects involving systematic clinical trials, field trials or late stage validation/certification of the technology.
    • PhD student research or any other academic research and research fellowship.

How does the Pfizer-IIT-Delhi Innovation & IP Program work?

  • All participants: Indian citizens (individual or a start-up), are required to fill in a comprehensive online application form covering the innovative idea in accordance with the guidelines
  • Applications received from Innovators/start-ups for either of the components of the program (resident incubation/ only IP support) will be screened by a selection committee of experts, that will cull out the promising proposals
  • The final shortlisted individuals will present their detailed business proposals to the Technology Business Incubation Unit (TBIU) Board of FITT
  • For innovators seeking comprehensive support to translate their healthcare ideas into new business opportunities, the Program will provide:
    1. Resident incubation at IIT-Delhi (Access to infrastructure, laboratory, experts etc.)
    2. Funding of upto Rs. 50 lakhs for each innovator
    3. Support for filing patents and other IP related services
  • For innovators who already have a proof of principle /concept and are only looking for IP related support, the program will provide:
    1. Access to IP counselling services at FITT
    2. Funding support to cover patenting expenses

How many healthcare ideas/ start-ups will be supported through Pfizer-IIT-Delhi Innovation and IP Program?

The program will support:
  • Upto 3 healthcare start-ups/individual innovators that will be incubated
  • Upto 10 healthcare innovations for IP filing only

When can one apply?

The Pfizer - IIT Delhi Innovation and IP Program (PIDIIP) registrations will open from 23rd September and closes on the 31st October, 5 PM.
PIDIIP Phase 1

Pfizer's unencumbered role will be to provide:
  1. Grants upto INR 50 lakhs for each innovator to take the selected ideas through proof of concept to IP filing
  2. Mentoring support from Pfizer’s global experts
FITT, IIT Delhi’s Role:
  1. Resident incubation at IIT-Delhi for a period of upto 2 years
  2. Mentoring support from IIT Delhi’s faculty and experts
  3. Access to infrastructure, prototyping laboratories and space for setting up an office
  4. Access to IP search and filing services Access to venture capitalists/ other industry linkages

What kind of healthcare ideas will be supported through the program?

The program will support healthcare ideas/innovations in the field of Medical devices, Mobile health, Microbial technology, Diagnostics, Bio-medical/Informatics, new healthcare technologies etc.

Who will own the Intellectual Property?

All information submitted in this document is considered to be non-confidential. While every effort will be made to preserve the confidentiality of each submission, it is suggested that highly sensitive material be excluded from the entry if the applicant is concerned about the confidentiality of such material. Please DO NOT provide information that contains business secrets or other confidential information, as this document may be shared with third party reviewers.
Members of the Evaluation Panel of the Pfizer-IIT Delhi Innovation and IP Program will be appointed, upon the basis, that they sign a Confidentiality Agreement with FITT that prohibits them from disclosing or using any details of the participants’ proposals in connection with the program.
Note, however, the ideas of the finalists of the program will be protected through a confidentiality agreement before final presentation to the Board of Technology Business Incubation Unit (TBIU) of FITT at IIT-Delhi.

What is the schedule of Pfizer-IIT Delhi Innovation and IP Program?

How will applications be short listed?

Applications will be short listed by a Selection Committee of the Pfizer –IIT Delhi Innovation and IP Program comprising of subject experts, entrepreneurs, IP experts and investors.

How will the short listed participants be informed?

The shortlisted participants will be informed through communication on email.

What is the final presentation to the Pfizer-IIT Delhi Innovation and IP Program?

All finalists will be invited to make a final presentation before the board of Technology Business Incubator (TBIU) of Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) at IIT-Delhi. This presentation will decide the final grantees of the Pfizer-IIT Delhi Innovation and IP Program.

What is the duration of resident incubation program?

I have a great idea for a startup, but I'm not technical. Will you still fund me?

The applicant needs to be qualified as per the eligibility criterion.

Does one need to relocate to Delhi if selected?

It depends on the program you are interested in applying to.
For resident incubation, you will need to stay at the Incubation Centre of IIT-Delhi for a period of upto two years.
For only IP support, the applicant can operate remotely.

Does this program also provide mentoring/ counseling guidance to interested candidates who don’t need funding?

The program is only open to applicants interested in either of the components (resident incubation/ only IP support)
